Istanbul Ancient Tales was created during Emine Bostancı’s artist-in-residency at Music Meeting. To mark this special occasion, Bostancı commissioned a new composition from Ardashes Agoshian, a highly respected Armenian double bassist, conductor, and composer based in the Netherlands.

The composition, titled Ancient Istanbul Tales, centers on the city of Istanbul itself. Agoshian, whose work is performed internationally, brings a unique perspective to the city’s story through his deep, intrinsic connection to its rich cultural and historical heritage. Combining elements from a wide range of musical traditions, Agoshian has crafted the piece for a small ensemble, skillfully blending diverse sounds that reflect the city’s timeless, multicultural essence.

This composition celebrates Istanbul’s profound history, cultural richness, and lasting influence, guiding listeners on a musical journey through the heart of a city that has long been a crossroads of diverse people and ideas.

This project premiered on May 28th, 2023, at the Music Meeting Festival.
